Shiny New Podcasting Setup!
So I believe that I have finally gathered all of the gear required for a successful podcast! At least, for myself to sound good. Jared and Steven are on their own
. Just kidding. I’ll be able to mix them in once I get my box-o-cables from Music123.com.
So without further ado, let’s take a look at our setup. Once I have my plethora of cables, I’ll come back with some diagrams as to where all the wires go. (Notice: Pics taken with iPhone. Forgive the quality, please!)
Microphone: Marshall MXL990 Large Diaphragm Condenser Mic: XLR
So far I have to say that I’m really enjoying this microphone. It’s on the ‘cheaper’ end of the spectrum, about $60, but I think it fits my voice well. I have another mic that I use when square dance calling that can also be used on the podcast, but it’s made primarily for that. Another plus? It looks cool.
Mixer: Behringer Xenyx 802: 8-input, 2 bus, Mic Preamp, Phantom Power, British EQ’s.
Behringer is typically known as a ‘bang for your buck’ company. Lots of needed features at a low price. The downside? For those of us with sensitive ears, the quality of sound isn’t mind-blowing. But, for $60, it’s perfect. I’d mix and compress out any benefits of a much more expensive mixer anyhow. It supplies phantom power, and I can mix in as many inputs as I need for the foreseeable future. I also hate the ‘British’ style controls. I learned Audio in High School running the college’s sound board. HUGE board covered with sliders. These knobs are just so unsatisfying. But, for $60, I don’t complain TOO much.
Expect an episode next week before I disappear into the woodworks for Oral Surgery.
